Indeed, number of possible isotopes of an element cannot be predicted either chemically or physically. Only theoretical calculations based on various nuclear models could predict which isotopes are more likely possible. Physical and chemical approaches would provide means of synthesizing the isotopes (e.g. LHC) or determining their properties.
