Strong reflected beams means diffraction occurs at specific angles.
You should know that the wavelength of a fast moving electron is about the size of an atom, interference pattern can be produced as the moving electron has wave properties.
Path difference of two electron beams within two adjacent layers could be measured as p.d.=2dsin(theta) where d is the separation between the two layers.
The layer of a crystal is regular so that a stable interference pattern is allowed.
