boiling point and intermolecular force

A) give you explanation for why ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH) has a higher boiling point (78.4 C) than methyl alcohol (CH3OH;64.7 C)


B) indicate the major intermolecular force for each of the following compounds

a) FCN
B )HCN
C) C2H6
D) CF2H2
E) H2o
F) CH3COOH

1. give you explanation for why ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH) has a higher boiling point (78.4 C) than methyl alcohol (CH3OH;64.7 C)

Points to consider:
1. Methyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol are alcohols. Both of them can form intermolecular hydrogen bond.
2. Ethyl alcohol has 2 carbon atoms but methyl alcohol has 1 carbon atom in the chain.
3. The longer the carbon chain, the strength of intermolecular forces is stronger.
So ethyl alcohol has a higher boiling point than methyl alcohol.
