I can only speak from my experience here in the US. Look at education as a passport, once you get in you have to adapt yourself to the corporate culture. I have seen people only lasted a month because they dont jive with their bosses or breaking company rules. Be flexible and  be a team player.

nope education isn't all that important, but without it, we can't even land on the company's doorstep

it is showing one of the good possible background, but there are more to concern than just a good background - e.g. attitude, knowledge, character, etc.

according to Li's  interview, he read lots, bought a lot of 2nd hand books previously owned by teachers, he said having underlined saved him time in reading.
he must be a very smart man, another self made man from vancouver is Jimmy Pattison he was very poor when growing up too, start working at very young age.
both could write their mein kempf.
i totally agree, knowledge is power, no difference as whether u learned inside  school or outside school, a slong as its correct it'll benefit u till day u buy farm.

If by education you mean having a Universtiy Diploma or a piece of paper proving you have been educated, then yes it is. Because it's the shorter route of "getting in the door". However, once you're in, knowledge takes over. Here's a little story:

WHERE TO TAP

Ever heard the story of the giant ship engine that failed? The ship's owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure but how to fix the engine. Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was a youngster. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom.

Two of the ship's owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. He carefully put his hammer away. The engine was fixed! A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for ten thousand dollars.

"What?!" the owners exclaimed. "He hardly did anything!"

So they wrote the old man a note saying, "Please send us an itemized bill."

The man sent a bill that read:

Tapping with a hammer ......................... $ 2.00
Knowing where to tap ............................ $ 9,998.00

Effort is important, but knowing where to make an effort in your life makes all the difference.

not important if you already got employed,
but if you want a promotion, it's a benefit for sure

is the experience,
for the health field they say u have a lot of academic knowledge when u fresh out of school but lacking practical exp.
as your flight time got accumulated your exp went up but academic skills drops down.
so an old duded wont be able to quote u any theories at all, but knew where to look for, a new grad will tell u many theories most likely none of them worked.

That's bad as I am worse than "low b".....but I kind of agree with you. Degree is just a base and it is also a basic requisition for ppl to look for higher pay job.

i wouldn't discount ppl who were deprived from attending a proper school are not firing in all cylinders, i have met many smart folks and acquired a lot of mulla even though they had only primary school or HS education.
whereas also find many folks who had a lot of post secondary & college edu
can't tell the hole on the ground from his own derriere.
because the nature of my job and also enjoy talking to ppl from all walks of life is not hard to size up how shmart they 're in a hurry.
some are almost bought their walking papers.
say there's a famous person's son who never graduated from a US ivory tower, only to find out when his company went public, oh what apublic humiliation?
if i were him i would have negotiated a deal with the prof to have my all my courses passed. how hard it is to give him enuf stock options so he can retire in the south sea comfortably?
all i can say this kid is many bricks short of a full load!
